Vermillion County Highway Building
Project type
Mural
Date
May 2023
Location
Cayuga, Indiana
Painting a mural on the Vermillion County Highway building in Cayuga, Indiana, during the summer of 2023 was both a rewarding and challenging project. Collaborating with R.J. Dunavan, a former client and county commissioner, made the process seamless as we worked together to envision how to bring vibrant life to the previously blank structure.
Drawing inspiration from the vehicles used by the highway department, we transformed the building’s front windows into dynamic windshields, showcasing a bulldozer, dump truck, and tractor. Along the side wall, bold lettering identifies the building to passersby, while a dump truck hauling gravel adds movement and visual interest to the long expanse.
This was my second large-scale mural, completed in the intense heat of a Midwestern summer. It was a privilege to work with R.J. again, especially on a project directly across from his restaurant, where I’ve previously painted both a wall mural and seasonal window displays.
